Basic Information Regarding Aerial Silk

By Andrea Davidson

Aerial silk refers to a type of performance art. It might also be referred to as aerial contortion or acrobatics. During these performances, one or many artists will engage in aerobatic acrobatics. All of the positions that are done are carried out while hanging from a special fabric known as the silk.

Performers climb up the fabric, which has been suspended from a high wall or ceiling, without using any type of safety lines or equipment. In doing this, they must rely on their training and skill to stay safe. The fabric is utilized to swing, spiral, fall, wrap and suspend the bodies into varying positions. On the silks, performers strike different poses and figures while in the air. Some choose to use dried rosin or spray on their hands and feet to help with gripping fabric and to increase the friction.

The fabrics that are used in this regime are strong but flexible and give. The width of the silks will range and is often dependent on the routine being done and the acrobat. Typically these are long enough so that rigging can be done, which is hanging of hammocks and silks. The material utilized is typically polyester lycra. Usually it includes some amount of stretch. It can be low, which is more common for beginners, or medium, which is often used by professionals.

Tricks are a major part of these acrobatic, aerial performances. There are three categorizations for the tricks that are commonly done: wraps, drops and climbs. The climbs can range from being practical and efficient to elegant and athletic. Some examples of these include the straddle climb and French climb.

Wraps are static poses that are done when the aerialists wrap silks around the various body parts. Usually wraps that are complex create more friction, which means less power and strength is necessary to hold a person up. When it comes to drops, performers wrap up high on the silks and fall lower. This trick demands more skill, control and strength than any other kind of trick. It is also quite risky.

Performers who do this act are strong and flexible. It takes hours of practice to truly master the art form and become skilled. Strength, power, flexibility and courage are some traits expected of aerialists.

Many of the people who do this kind of art end up working for the circus or a similar entertainment group. They might be part of companies that are hired to perform at events, such as carnivals, large parties, weddings and festivals. The price to book these entertainers is expected to vary and may depend on the acrobat, performance, company, or event.

Aerial silk is a type of performance that has become increasingly popular in recent years. This involves aerial using special fabrics known as silks to do a variety of climbs, drops and wraps while suspended high in the air with little or no safety equipment. The individuals who perform these tricks and performances are known for being strong and flexible. These performers are often hired as entertainment at special events.
