Tips on How to Write a Beginner Country Song

There are many ways to write a good song, the purpose of this article is to highlight some of the key factors that can make a song a hit based on songs that have done well in the past. I will highlight some similarities and common themes between today's current country hits and give suggestions on how to fit these themes to your own life experiences and expectations.
There are several themes among popular country songs. These themes can be seen not just in country music, but in every genre. These themes are love, heartache, summertime, and partying. While there are obviously several other themes, if you do not know where to start, start broad by picking a category. Your other option is always to tell a story. This story could be anything from a one day/ night experience to a whole lifetime journey put into three or 4 minutes.
I separated love and heartache because these songs tend to be very different from each other. A love song tends to be more hopeful and about all of the good things that goes along with love. If you are writing a love song, one thing that helps is thinking about the little details. A great example of this is Lee Brice's "A Woman Like You" he brings up little things and it ends up being catchy and relatable. Songs about heartache tend to show more pain in their lyrics. With both love and heartache the songs can be as deep or light as you want them to be, just remember the more real they are, the better the song.
Songs about summer are always fun to write about. They usually end up being upbeat and make you feel good to listen to them. If you wanted to breakdown the theme even further you could write about something basic. For example, summer nights, bonfires, or something related to swimming. Sometimes all it takes is that one little word to either spark a memory or a dream and off you go with the writing.
Partying is a very broad generalization but it is a very dominant theme in country music. This is the type of song you just want to have a good time to. Dierks Bentley has several good examples of good party songs. These songs are fun and laid back with not too much emotion. If you are still struggling with what you want to write about a party song could be a good place to start.
If you really want to write country music then just stick with it. There will be good songs and there will be not so good songs. If you get frustrated with one path you are on you can always put it aside and start a different song then go back to the first one. Writing songs is about making music how you want, not making it for other people.
