Despite the band music career being short, New York Dolls were one of the most important bands, in the history of rock music. Before Sylvain Sylvain and Billy Doll, joined this band, they were previously playing, in another popular band known as the Pox. After Sylvain Sylvain, left the Pox band, he went and started a clothing business and this shop played a very important role, in Sylvain Sylvain life.

In 1970, Sylvain Sylvain and Billy Doll established another band and later recruited Johnny Thunders in the group. Sylvain taught Johnny how to play guitar in the band. After they established this band, they called themselves the "Dolls". But, the group music career came to an end, when Sylvain decided to go to London for a few months, this forced Thunders and Murcia to concentrate on their solo projects. Since New York Dolls ventured into the world of music, they have inspired many musicians and rock bands such as Kiss as well as Aerosmith. The group has also influenced Sex Pistols members such as Steve Jones.

Morrissey was an ardent fan of New York Dolls and he reformed the group in 2004. He established the band with Johansen, Kane and Sylvain. The reformation made the group to produce a DVD, a LP and a film. But, the group suffered a huge blow, when they lost one of the band members Arthur Kane, in 2004. Arthur was suffering from leukemia and his death affected the band performance. In 2004, the band played several festivals in London.

In 2005, New York Dolls released a new album. Members who were featured in this album were Brain Delaney, Steve Conte, Harry Smiths, Brain Koonin and David Johansen. After the band produced there new album, they performed in a concert in United States, in 2006. They also started their European tour in 2006 and Sylvian, had a chance to talk about the band history on STV.

Despite the band facing numerous line up changes, they proved that they are one of the best bands in America, when it came to live performances. Almost all the albums that were released by the New York Dolls were received well by fans.
