Kaylee Rutland performed on this year's Dallas Music Festival. She is an 18 year old singer/songwriter working in the contemporary country genre. Music has been an enormous part of her life since she was a child and being musical performer has always been something she's wanted to do. Kaylee focuses all of her songs around material that is close to her heart, such as her faith, her family, as well as her friends, and she states that most of her influence is from other country singers like Carrie Underwood, Reba McEntire, and Sarah Evans.
When Kaylee takes time to attempt to write her songs, she says she holds herself to an extremely high standard of quality, and can often be tough on her self during her writing procedures. But once Kaylee has the lyrics and rough structural idea for a song down, she then meets up with her backing band to hammer out the details of the song, bounce ideas off of each other, and basically "jam through it."
It has been about a year since her first EP was released; she is just about done recording her second EP and plans on releasing it sometime very soon. Kaylee just finished recording a song and music video with country stars, Jamie O'Neal and Colt Ford. "It was a real blessing to record with such nice and down to earth people like Jamie and Colt," said Rutland. When Kaylee was just starting out in music, she says her biggest challenge was getting on stage and being comfortable instead of feeling awkward. Other than that Kaylee says rarely has any trouble with her band, pointing out that they get along really well.
Kaylee tells us that her favorite show she's every played was a two-hour show right before a Stars game, known as the Pregame Party on the Plaza (the Stars are Dallas's NHL hockey team). She has been lucky enough to play this event two times. "I loved every minute of it, even though it was freezing cold!" she said. Kaylee says that if she could open up for any band or artist in the world, she would want to open up for Reba McEntire - her idol.
As advice to other up-and-coming performers much like herself, Kaylee says to listen to your loved ones and not the skeptics. "The ones you need to listen to are the ones who believe in you," she says, "if you believe in yourself, then other people will start to believe in you. If you believe in yourself, you will succeed." Kaylee ended up playing on one of the headlining spots during the 2014 Dallas Music Festival, and we wish her all the best in her future career.
