Learning How To Draw Cartoon Characters Takes Practice And Patience

By Krystal Branch

Nearly everybody wishes they knew how to draw cartoon characters, however those who cannot do it seem to think it is some kind of mystical art. They feel it is something that they needed to have learned in their school days, where they could either draw and paint, or they couldn't and would give up easily. Some of their friends could draw cartoons very easily, and they were very envious.

Learning the fundamentals of drawing cartoons does not take very long, and it doesn't depend on having any previous artistic experience. It is all down to your willingness to learn, and being patient. It is not a skill that you have to be born with, or that runs in the family, anybody should be able to draw very simple characters in a few hours. The more time and effort you put into it, the better you will become.

It is a good idea to study the cartoon characters that you see in comic books, and on television. You will notice that they are mainly based on very simple shapes. These are normally geometrical shapes such as squares, circles, and triangles. The character does not have to be complicated, and usually the simpler they are the better.

It is very important that you take your time learning the basics of your new hobby. The best way is to take it step-by-step, and create your own strategy when it comes to drawing. Decide what you want to see before you put pencil to paper. Do you want them to have a round face, or a long face. For a round face, start by drawing a circle, and a long face use an oval shape. Approaching your drawings like this will help you achieve great results.

Your next task would be to add features to the face. You follow exactly the same principle, using simple shapes to form the nose, eyes and mouth. Your cartoon will generally need a body as well, so go ahead and use the shape you require to complete your initial sketch.

Simplicity is the key to success when drawing. You should not over-complicate your initial sketch. If you do you will run into problems, and you will soon become very frustrated with your efforts, and all the enjoyment that you can get from drawing will be lost.

Once you have your basic sketch on paper, made up of circles, squares, triangles etc, you can then start to add a bit of detail. If you are not sure how to progress at this point, take a look at other cartoon characters like those in Disney cartoons, and see how different shapes were used to highlight different features. Dissecting the way famous cartoonists have made their drawings can help you to develop your own style.

Using this step-by-step method is the best way of learning how to draw cartoon characters. At the start you will need a lot of patience, but following simple strategies will help you see the character grow quite quickly. Just remember that it is far easier to sketch out the outline first, and when you are happy with the result, then you can start fine tuning the drawing to add the special characteristics to your cartoon.
