An Abstract Watercolor Painting In Easy Steps

By Cecile Ingram

Many people shy away from doing any arts and crafts as they feel that they are not artistic. There is an area where everyone can join in no matter how artistic they are. This is the field of abstract watercolor painting, and it is so simple to do, and at the end of the day you end up with your own unique piece of artwork. You don't even need to spend a fortune on materials, and they can all be obtained at your local arts and crafts store.

A simple exercise only needs a small amount of time and a few items. Obviously you will need paper, something firm to fix it to and something to fix it with. Then there is also a brush, a paint kit and some rubber cement. Most people will use tape to keep the paper on the backing board, but here is a tip to prevent your paper ripping. Cut lengths of tape to size and stick them to your clothes. Quickly remove the lengths of tape, this places small fibers on the tape and so it is not quite so strongly adhesive.

Initially you are advised to stick with just two colors for your first masterpiece. They should be colors that are next to each other on something called a color wheel. A quick look on the internet will reveal what this means. So for example it could be blue and green, or red and yellow. The color choice is yours but should match in with your existing decor.

Once your paper is fixed in position, you can apply the rubber cement in a random style. Let the adhesive dry, to speed the process up you could make use of something like a hair dryer. When the adhesive has dried, you can start painting. You can experiment and find out how the paint merges when it gets wetter. There are no rules as it is your work.

You don't have to cover every square inch of paper first time round. Let the paint dry, once again the hair dryer can be utilised for this process. When the paint has dried more cement solution can be applied. Again this has to be dried before repainting can take place. This whole process may be carried out as many times as you wish until you are satisfied.

When everything is dry the rubber cement can be removed. This is easily done by gently rubbing it with the pad of your finger. Once the cement has been totally removed you start to see the pattern emerging. Some people will opt to use a pen to outline these shapes, whereas others prefer to leave it as it is.

The tape can now also be removed at this point. You will notice how easily it can be removed without ripping the paper, if you followed the earlier tip. Also you will now have nice clear border areas.

It is this simple to create an abstract watercolor painting. Maybe you now realize that art is not quite so difficult, and possibly you might wish to further explore the art world. Now you need to decide where to display your masterpiece.
