What Makes a Great Dance Song?

If you are someone who is invested in learning to write music and in making songs that people are going to want to hear over and over again, you need to think about what goes into making certain songs great. Of course, what makes a piece of classical music great is different from what it takes to make an excellent dance song, so remember to be specific. If you are someone who is thinking about writing a dance song, think about what you can do to make it something that will last.

For example, make the most of your drum beats. Drum beats, whether you have the played or you sample them from other sources, provide an essential backbone to your dance song. Even if people cannot follow the more intricate system of melodies that you have over it, they can usually find the beat from the drums and dance to that. Think about the music that has moved you to dance, and think about what the drums are doing.

Consider using midi samples to add to the audio texture. There are people who say that midi samples are overplayed, but the real problem is that people do not know when and how to use them. The midi sample is never something that should take centre stage. When you want to write a great original dance song, you should make sure that the midi sample that you use is something that stays in the background.

Keep the lyrics simple and easy to hear. Depending on what you are doing, you may find that lyrics are unnecessary. However, if you can throw lyrics in, do so. Lyrics, especially good ones, act as another hook. The words help some people remember the beat, and on top of that, they also give you something that you can use to influence the song. Just because you know the melody does not mean that you know the song should be played right away, and the lyrics can help.

For the most part, dance songs are fast. Listen to dance songs in the genre that you want to write for, and count it out. Chances are good that you will find that the song is a lot faster than you think it is. Having a very rapid beat is a great way to get people excited and ready to move.

Remember that when it comes to writing music, the best thing to do is to listen to a lot of the music that you like. Make sure that you listen actively, scanning for the things that make you like a certain song, and also for things that best please you.

Consider what it takes to make a great dance song, and go from there. Inspiration is never far away and you might even become the next big thing in dance music.
