North Coast Music Festival 2011, Friday: David Guetta

2011-09-03T03:44:17.003-07:00

Frenchman David Guetta closed out day one of the North Coast Music Festival with a set on the largest stage. The DJ, a superstar in Europe, was clearly pleased to be playing in front of sizable crowd here in the States, where electronic music is hardly universally accepted. "This is my biggest show in your city," Guetta said at one point. "Are you ready for my 'F$%# Me, I'm Famous' beats?" he asked referring to the name of his world-renowned Ibiza-based parties. The crowd was indeed ready: ready to dance, hoola hoop, glowstick-twirl and fist pump as Guetta dished out wave after wave of seismic beats that threatened to bury those in attendance. Like Wolfgang Carter, who played before him, Guetta has risen to the upper echelon of sought-after producers for pop stars and rappers. Appropriately, the DJ's songs conjure a crowd-pleasing mix of house and electroclash, with the occasional sample by the likes of Kelly Roland and Ludacris. The beats, removed and re-dropped multi ple times per song, got the crowd moving, even if they did operate with the subtlety of a Mac truck."I came…to make…you sweat," Guetta declared early in his set. And by that yard stick he was successful, though the day's steamy temperatures may have had something to do with it. While Tron-like blue lines pulsed on the projection screen behind him, Guetta jumped around and extolled the crowd, while layering trancey beeps on top of his relentless four-on-the-floor beats. No one song or rhythm felt particularly out of place, but cumulatively they felt somewhat robotic and impersonal. Like cheap bubblegum, his compositions all started promisingly, with an initial blast of techno bliss, only to quickly lose their flavor. Aficionados of house or other forms of electronic music may not always care for Guetta's meat-and-potatoes style, but you can hardly argue with the results, as proven by the large and actively grooving crowd. The thunderstorms in the day's forecast held off, and Guetta's throbbing ravers were a fitting end to the first night of this genre-spanning festival, now in its second year. Guetta said goodnight and thanked the crowd, only to reappear moments later. "We have two minutes to play!" he informed the crowd, happing for an excuse to prolong the party.[...] Nothin But the Beat

Review: Guetta mails in "Nothing But The Beat"

2011-09-02T20:52:03.302-07:00

David Guetta, "Nothing But The Beat" (Capitol)David Guetta's new album "Nothing But The Beat" presents the Grammy-winning DJ and producer with a formidable task. Take good music from good artists and it infuse it with a dance club floor-filling frenzy. If there's anyone who can, surely it's the urban dance-track maestro who collaborates with A-list artists. Right?Well, half-right. On "Nothing But The Beat," Guetta accomplishes the main mission, but it's nothing to run out and buy a new pair of dancing shoes for. This is a fairly routine treatment at best, and Guetta doesn't inject enough of his own style to take the music to a level that the list of featured vocalists couldn't do on their own.Guetta gets things started in fine fashion, adding some of his signature energy to "Where Them Girls At," with sharp vocals from Flo Rida and white-hot Nicki Minaj. The good stuff continues through "Little Bad Girl," with solid feature work from Ludacri s and Taio Cruz. But then things begin to get pretty pedestrian. "Sweat" with Snoop Dogg is a snoozer and "Without You" featuring Usher never delivers much more than soaring synth track. The latter song is about as edgy as a Kia Sorento commercial for soccer moms.Guetta is on auto-pilot these days. He's on top of his game, but his game currently is to deliver safe club music to the masses. There's nothing daring in his approach to production and remixing and for this result, he's failed a bit.CHECK THIS TRACK OUT: Thank you Jennifer Hudson. Even David Guetta's soft-sell approach couldn't ruin "Night Of Your Life." Hudson's voice is perfect here, with all the right emotion in all the right places. Guetta keeps it simple with a buzzing backbeat and Hudson keeps it lush with vocals that will always have a home on the hottest dance floors. Minaj and Hudson saved this album from being a total loss. LMFAO Call David Guetta A 'Party Starter'

2011-09-02T20:45:59.141-07:00

LOS ANGELES — David Guetta's just-dropped new album, Nothing but the Beat, features a handful of A-list contributors, including Nicki Minaj, Snoop Dogg, will.i.am, Chris Brown, Lil Wayne, Akon and Usher. It's Guetta's latest entry into the world of mainstream music, and it seems that everyone in pop is scrambling to work with him. When MTV News caught up with dance duo LMFAO, who worked with the French house-music DJ on the 2010 track "Gettin' Over You" (also featuring Fergie and Chris Willis), they revealed the real reason why everyone in the business wants to hop in the studio with Guetta."Well, he is a party starter; great DJ, great personality," RedFoo told MTV News last week before the 2011 Video Music Awards. "He shares his software with you. [He's like] 'Here's the whole bundle, enjoy.' I don't think we're supposed to talk about that ... but he would."RedFoo's party partner, SkyBlu, said Guetta is such a pleasure to work with because he's an easygoing guy. "[He's the] happiest person you've ever met. He'll put a smile on your face no matter how bad your day's going. [If] you're gonna hang out with David, you're gonna have a smile on your face."While they didn't share whether they had any plans to work with Guetta again, the guys did reveal that they shot the video for their next single, "Sexy and I Know It," in L.A. earlier this week Top DJ David Guetta: I'm not a star

2011-09-02T20:43:45.861-07:00

PARIS - His album sales run in the millions worldwide and he's worked with the biggest names in rap and R&B, but French DJ and dance music producer David Guetta does not feel like a star. "I don't see myself like that," the 43-year-old Frenchman told AFP in an interview as his new double-album was released this week. "One day my son asked me, 'Dad, are you a star?' I told him, 'You know, it's complicated. A star (he used the English word) means a star and sometimes you have shooting stars: they shine, then they fade out'," he said. He's nonetheless grateful for his meteoric rise. "It's nice because success has allowed me to have a blast on stage, to be in the studio with amazing people, but I find it all a bit bizarre," said Guetta. In ground-breaking partnerships with major artists like The Black Eyed Peas and Kelly Rowland, the award-winning Guetta has sold over three million albums and millions of singles that include "Sexy Bitch" and "I Gotta Feeling", not to mention developi ng a major digital fan base. The US magazine Billboard, the bible of the music industry, once wrote that he was responsible for "changing the sound of radio". "I found this greatly exaggerated at the time, but in fact they were right because American radio never played electro music," he said, referring to the electronic dance music sound that emerged in the 1980s. "What's more, in America everything is separate. At the time, for a piece to be played just as well on 'urban' (hip hop and R&B) radio as on 'pop' radio - a polite way of saying black or white - it was revolutionary!" he said. Guetta works closely with his wife Cathy with whom he has two children, a boy and a girl. He has said it was listening to pirated music in the 1980s at the tender age of 12 that triggered his passion for making and mixing music, way before he started professionally, DJing at clubs in Paris. Despite his megastar status, he's not upheld as any sort of musical prophet at home in high-culture France . He's big enough to have been turned into one of the puppets on wildly popular and influential prime-time satirical TV show, "Les Guignols de l'info", but the show tends to poke fun at his music as formulaic and simplistic.- 'Only place I'm nervous' - Guetta readily admits that France is "the only place where I am nervous before going on stage," and quickly avows "appreciation" that he topped the line-up at two big annual French rock festivals, both of which broke attendance records this summer. "After all these years when I fought so that the art of mixing, for electro to be recognised in the same way hip-hop, rock and pop is, to be invited to festivals like that, it sort of means it's o.k. now," he said. His double disc album "Nothing but the Beat" was released this week by the EMI label. The first disc follows the formula that made Guetta's name - thumping 'urban' electronic mixes tailored for clubs and performed by a host of big name US stars like Will.i.am, Snoop Dogg, Usher, Ludacris, Nicki Minaj, Flo-Rida and others. The second disc is instrumental, what Guetta calls a return to his roots and the "community" who helped set him on his musical path. "In the beginning, I only did this, I did the piece that was missing from my DJ set. Then I had the chance to meet Chris Willis, an amazing guy who comes from gospel. I learned a lot from him and I loved the more melodic cuts." After his 2009 album "One Love" that "pushed the vocals as far as they could go", Guetta said he wanted again to "show my original fans" that he was "still with them". While the vocals have what might be called an American sound, the DJ said he wanted to "return to a French sound" for the electro part, modelled after the French Touch, a genre that popularised the French electronic music scene throughout the world in the late 1990s, with bands like Air or Daf[...] David Guetta's 'Nothing But the Beat' Lands in Hollywood (Video)

2011-09-02T20:40:38.145-07:00

Nothing But the Beat, a documentary about French house D.J. and producer David Guetta, screened for the first time in the U.S. Tuesday in Los Angeles. EMI/Capitol Records marked the occasion, and the release of his album of the same name, by lighting up its Hollywood building in red.

Nothing But the Beat chronicles Guetta's rise to the pinnacle of the electronica world, from his first gigs in underground gay clubs in France to playing to crowds of 80,000-plus in stadiums and events like the Electric Daisy Carnival around the world. He's interviewed on the road, behind the turntables, awkwardly filming music videos, and in hotel room after hotel room -- all while maintaining good spirits and a sense of humor. The Huse Monfaradi-directed project, which plays more like a music video or a commercial than a straight documentary, argues that Guetta's hit collaborations with artists like Black Eyed Peas (he produced "I Got a Feeling"), Flo Rida and Nicki Minaj ("Where Them Girls At"), and Snoop Dogg ("Sweat") have finally pushed electronica, and specifically house music, into the mainstream.Will.i.am, Flo Rida, Kelly Rowland, Usher, Ludacris and Snoop reinforce that thesis during their interviews in the film. Snoops says Guetta promised him a No. 1 hit worldwide when they collaborated and Guetta delivered with at least Top 5 rankings in various territories. Rowland, who belted it out in "When Love Takes Over," calls Guetta's live act a transformative experience.Laidback Luke, Fatboy Slim, Laurent Garnier, David Morales, Pete Tong and 2 Many DJs are also among those who weigh in on Guetta's influence on the music industry in the film. And as one interviewer points out, there would be no electronica genre today if it wasn't for the European market and club culture that Guetta and his contemporaries developed.Jennifer Hudson, Afrojack, Sia, Taio Cruz, Chris Brown, Akon and Jessie J are also featured on various tracks on the Nothing But the Beat album, which celebrated its release with a penthouse party at the Chateau Marmont attended by Will.i.am and others.Asked how he felt about the Nothing But the Beat album at a Q&A following the film screening, Guetta said, "There's no filler in this album. I'm going back to my roots and showing a different side of myself with it."
